To use multiple computers on one keyboard/mouse/monitor setup, you use a KVM switch. The Belkin has great specs to mix up to four computers, but doesn’t deliver.
I recently got rid of two computers, which means I now only have three left. A mac mini which basically acts as a printer/file server, a Windows PC with 7800GT video card (already becoming a bit vintage but still functional) as my game machine and my Macbook Pro as my main workhorse.
During the same purge I got rid of the two monitor setup I had and I bought one large 24″ wide screen HP w2408h which is quite a nice screen. So I wanted to hook up all my computers to it. I did some searching online and found that most KVM switches only have room for two computers. However I also wanted to hook up my laptop sometimes so I went for a four computer choice. It’s always good to have some ‘headroom’ for expansion.
So here’s the lowdown on the Belking Omniview:
Dealbreakers (had I known before I bought this thing)
- The keyboard keeps on mysteriously and unpredictably repeating the letter ‘a’. Also it doesn’t deal well with fast 10 finger typing. Characters just get lost and you have to go back and retype. This is especially impractical when typing passwords.
- The resolution of my monitor is 1920×1200. On the mac mini it doesn’t even show that resolution to choose, on the macbook pro the resolution is there but without the correct frequency so it still doesn’t work. On Windows machine: no problems.
Pros
- Also switches audio (2 channel stereo only)
- both usb and ps/2 compatible for connection to computers
- No power supply needed
Cons
- All keyboards must be connected with same connection (ps/2 or usb)
- No USB keyboard input
