Netscape Navigator is back, like it’s 1994

Well, for now it is anyway and only on OS X.

Previously I’d switched to Camino because Firefox kept crashing on OSX, plus it’s a slow dog and a memory hog. Safari obviously is not an option since there are just too many sites that don’t work well on it (Google Docs to name one). Overall, I’ve liked my time on Camino, but I’ve had a few nags. The most important being: it doesn’t support the standard Firefox XPI plugin architecture, causing me to not having my del.icio.us plugin or my Google Toolbar.

But now, all those problems have been adressed by Netscape Navigator. The new Navigator version 9.0 has better integration with OSX than Firefox, my favorite password manager 1password.app integrates fine with it, it doesn’t crash AND I’ve got all my standard firefox plugins.

There’s an option in Navigator to turn of the Splash Screen when starting, but I’m leaving it on just to give me that retro 1994-feeling.

I’ve also tried the Firefox 3.0 beta (for now rightfully nicked ‘Minefield’) and it looks promising - OS integration-wise. If it could just refrain from the crashing and memory hogging, maybe I’ll switch.

For now, it’s 1994 baby!
